Shrouded in mystery, the purpose of this archetypal figure is uncertain. The raised arms suggest either celebration or mourning while the emphasis on sexual characteristics suggests a connection with fertility. Its discovery in a tomb may connect it with rebirth. Indeed, figures of this type have been interpreted as dancers, worshipers, mourners, symbols of resurrection, mother images or goddesses. The figure with her arms upraised is sometimes referred to as the Nile Goddess due to her prevalence in ancient Egypt.
Pewter with gold finish pendant is strung on a faux black leather cord. It is based on a piece in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
