Gemstone Properties |
Lapis Lazuli |
Lapis lazuli is a relatively rare semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense blue color. Lapis lazuli was being mined in the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan as early as the 3rd millennium B.C.E. Trade in the stone is ancient enough for lapis jewelry to have been found at Predynastic Egyptian and ancient Sumerian sites, and as lapis beads at neolithic burials in Mehrgarh, the Caucasus, and even as far from Afghanistan as Mauritania. It is deep blue with veining, usually in white, with flecks of gold and/or silver. |

Materials |
Gold Vermeil |
Vermeil is a combination of sterling silver, gold, and other precious metals, commonly used as a component in jewelry. A typical example is sterling silver coated with 14 carat (58%) gold. To be considered vermeil, the gold must be at least 10 carat (42%) and be at least 2.5 micrometres thick. Vermeil can be produced by either fire-gilding or electrolysis. Today, vermeil is safely produced by electrolysis. It is very durable with normal wear but as with all plating methods, it can be worn away in reaction with some people or chemicals |
Mixed Metal |
Metal alloy with a silver or gold tone usually a blend of tin, copper and other materials. Lead free. May contain trace amounts of nickel which is used in silver tone pieces to enhance shine. Often plated with gold, silver or brass. |
